Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse is often considered Americas dirty little secret because alcohol abuse is no so different than drug abuse. Alcohol abuse is involved in millions of deaths every year including vehicle accidents, body function failures and homicides. The widespread problem of alcohol abuse is often confused by mixed messages of alcohol promotion and event sponsorship. Drinking is not illegal like street drugs but alcohol abuse leads to problems that are just as threatening as drug abuse. Many people lose family, friends, freedom and their lives due to alcohol abuse.

The National Health Institute on Drug Abuse has quantified alcohol abuse as having about 5 drinks within a short amount of time. This can be less or more depending on the individual but the overall pattern is important. Our feeling is that most people reading information on alcohol abuse already feel that they or a loved one is having trouble with alcohol. A general rule is that if you suspect that you or a loved one is has a problem with alcohol abuse then it is probably so. The next step is to get help with the problem before it gets worse. The most damaging pattern of alcohol abuse is that it always gets worse if not treated.

Left untreated alcohol abuse can turn into alcoholism. Alcoholism is a medically recognized disease characterized by a chronic progressive abuse of alcohol. Individuals suffering from alcoholism find that they cannot stop drinking on their own even if they wish. Alcoholics will begin to suffer any number of problems as a result of their alcohol abuse including:

blackouts
drunk driving arrest
missing work
losing a job
financial problems
criticism about drinking by family and friends
loss of drivers license
going to jail
marital problems
divorce
physical problems
mental problems
clouded thinking
depression
insomnia
weight loss

Due to the progressive nature of alcoholism, this list of problems will continue to increase until premature death.
